Hotel d'Italie, Craig Street opposite Champ de Mars, Montreal, QC, 1907-17
The clientele for this modest hotel on Craig Street, which looked like dozens of others in the city, was perhaps the Italian immigrants who were landing in Montreal a the beginning of the 20th century. That, at least, is what is suggested by its name, Hotel d'Italie, and the name of its proprietor, Roncari. It was near the port and St. Lawrence Boulevard, the gateway to Montreal for immigrants. The first little Italian community actually began to form a little to the east.
